Calgary’s bid for the 2026 Olympic games is in jeopardy after a council committee agreed a vote is needed on whether to continue with the process or put an end to the bid.

Several councilors raised concerns Tuesday about missteps and a lack of neutrality on the part of the city’s Olympic project team. Among those concerns was the decision to incorporate a sub-committee who will engage public approach on the possible bid.

Councilor’s believe the sub committee is filled with people who will benefit from the Olympics and are questioning their neutrality.

” Well I think we should be concerned with the level of transparency because if the public doesn’t know and doesn’t have the information, which I was advocating for, how can you make a decision?” – Councilor George Chahal

Another Olympics could mean a multi-billion dollar injection for upgrades on some of the city’s forty year old winter sports facilities and funding for new ones.

If the Council decides to continue exploring a bid, it will ignite further discussions about the city’s plan for public engagement and a renewed possibility on the Olympics.
