H-S-B-C scandal

The Huawei executive, Meng Wanzhou who is widely known for being suspected of lying to the H-S-B-C bank regarding her relationship with an Iran-based subsidiary, is in the second day of her extradition hearing in the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver. Meng is suspected of putting H-S-B-C at risk of violating United States sanctions against Iran.  From the moment of Meng’s arrest, Canada and China’s diplomatic relations have been jeopardized.

The hearing judge will assess whether Meng’s case meets the legal test of double criminality where she could be charged in both Canada and abroad.  If Meng’s assumed conduct meets this test, she would be extradited to face her charges.

Meng’s lawyers argued in court yesterday for her freedom based on the allegation that the US is using fraud charges as a ruse for trying to enforce sanctions on Iran.
